39-Year-Old Person Undergoes 3rd Successful Open Heart Surgery at Citizens Specialty Hospital

Hyderabad, 24th January 2017: The cardiac team at Citizens Specialty Hospital led by Dr. Vikram Aerra, Senior Consultant Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. G. Muthuswamy, Senior Consultant Anesthesiologist and Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Senior Cardiologist, has successfully performed a complex lifesaving Aortic Surgery on a 39-year-old patient, who had already undergone two open heart surgeries at other hospitals. The surgery was performed for over 10 hours after cooling the body to 18 degrees on a heart-lung machine and then stopping the entire blood circulation. The team achieved a rare feat of successfully performing the third-time bypass surgery on a single patient.

The patient, Tirupathi suffers from a genetic condition called Marfan’s Syndrome. He had undergone two heart surgeries in 2009 and 2016 to have mitral value and aortic valve replacement. Tirupathi was admitted to the Citizens Specialty Hospital with tear and swelling of major artery Aorta, a life threatening condition called Aortic dissection with Aneurysm of Aorta. On examination of the case, the doctors found the Aorta being dilated to a size of 8.0cm from normal size and due to previous surgeries, heart and the Aorta were completely stuck to the back of breast bone, making it more complex and highly risky to operate upon.
Elaborating on the surgery, Dr. Vikram Aerra, MBBS, MS, M.Ch, FRCS (Ed), FRCS (CTh), said, “It was one of the most complex surgeries involving replacement of swollen and torn aorta using artificial tube graft. We had also replaced major arteries supplying blood to brain with artificial tubes, which helped the patient to recover fast.”
Mr. Nilesh Gupta, Facility Director at Citizens Specialty Hospital said, “Aortic aneurysm is the 13th leading cause of death in the US. Aortic aneurysm is the 13th leading cause of death in the US. In India, we are able detect the Aortic Aneurysm due to efficient investigating methods. At Citizens Specialty Hospital, we have developed a comprehensive cardiology department – Citizens Heart – where we look at heart care with a holistic perspective that goes beyond traditional diagnostic and treatment procedures. Our cardiologists and cardiac surgeon work in the most cohesive manner for benefit of the patient.”

Dr. A Sreenivas Kumar, Chairman Cardiovascular Sciences & Chief Cardiologist said, “Our team comprises a set of experienced and dedicated specialists who are trained to manage diverse cardiovascular disease subsets with expertise. The hospital is equipped with an advanced Cath-lab to do lifesaving emergency procedures such as primary angioplasty and cardiothoracic surgeries. We have a cardiologist in-house 24X7 to take care of the patients. Be it simple problems or complex surgical interventions or even highly critical emergencies, we are at the top of heart care with experience, expertise and excellence.”

Marfan’s syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Individuals with this disorder are often very thin, tall with a lean body structure. Due to a weak body structure, such people are prone to leaky heart valves and situations that lead to Aortic Dissection (tear in major artery) or even Aneurysm of Aorta (swelling) quite often. Although surgical procedures on aorta are risky, timely intervention coupled with capable teams and adequate infrastructure can save most of the patients. Such situations require clinical expertise, coordinated team effort and availability of world-class infrastructure, and Citizens Specialty Hospital provides all these under one roof.
