The Peer Gynt Cycle Theater Play

Peer Gynt is the son of the once rich and highly regarded Jon Gynt, who drank and gambled and lost all his money, leaving Peer and his mother Ase to live in poverty. Peer wants to restore what his father lost, but gets tangled up in lies and day-dreams. He crashes a wedding at the grand farm Haegstad but drinks to get his spirits up. At the party he meets the young and beautiful Solveig, and tries to seduce her telling a fantastical story of how he rode a reindeer-stag over the mountain of Gjendin. She warms to him, but still rejects him because of his bed reputation and his drinking. He then steals away the bride, Ingrid, a former flirtation. He rejects her after a passionate night together, remembering Solveig at home. He gets outcast by the community and has to flee.

During his flight over the mountains, he meets three amorous dairy-maids and a green-clad girl. She turns out to be the daughter of the old troll-king of the mountains. They bring him into the hall of the mountain-king, where he refuses to | pledge loyal to the old Troll-rule, “to be yourself enough”. He runs of again, and J meets Solveig who has left her home to be with him, and start a new life together. | But he is then found by the green-clad girl, who confronts him of his break of 1 promise and introduces him to his son. Scared to be trapped in this conflict between 1 these two women, Peer flees and visits his old mother, who dies in his arms. Peer | then flees Norway and goes on a long journey around the world.

He travels for many years, takes part in various occupations and plays various roles ® including that of a businessman engaged in shady enterprises on the' coast of I Morocco, wanders through the desert and tries to seduce Anitra, a Bedouin temptress, passes the Sphinx in Egypt, and ends up as a guest of Doctor Begriffenfedt in the madhouse in Cairo, where he is hailed as emperor. He breaks down, and realizes that he has run away from everything important. He is haunted by women in his past, including his mother. He feels empty and without a purpose in life. He needs to 1 return home. Back home in Norway Peer meets the Button-moulder, who maintains that Peer’s soul must be melted down with other faulty goods unless he ran explain when and where in life he has been ’’himself1', and whether or not he has been a sinner.

Peer, in ever greater despair, reaches Solveig, who has been waiting for him in the cabin ever since he left. She tells him that he has always been himself in her belief, her hope and in her love.

Peer Gynt in 70 minutes and performed on an elevated platform measuring only 2 square meters: a breakneck journey; a film on stage. Forgotten is the lying and fussy mother, the drunken father and all those who surround him. Peer wants to get away from everything, get up in the world, and become Emperor! This is Peer Gynt performed on a very limited space, which intensifies both Peer's story and the form in which it is told. PEER! a coproduction with the National Theatre of Norway, and has toured extensively since the opening during the International Ibsen Festival in 2012.
