In an interview a couple of years ago, Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap said that you can't sit in a room with ten independent directors after they have delivered one hit. He suggested that they are so pretentious that their 'I know everything' attitude will put anybody off. They might have made just one film but they behave as though they are geniuses.
Venkatesh Maha, the director of 'Care Of Kancharapalem', has been accused of living up to Kashyap's description of a pompous filmmaker with limited credentials to speak of. Another Telugu filmmaker, as per Netizens, has joined the league.
Phanindra Narsetti, who won a niche fan base with his short film Backspace in 2012, later made Madhuram and Manu. The latter was roundly panned by the audience, while a section of its discerning viewership and critics community praised it. To be fair to him, Manu was poetic and poignant. In his pre-release interviews ahead of the release of 8 Vasantalu, Phanindra, however, has been needlessly vocal. In a recent interview, he trashed everyone who had panned Mani Ratnam after watching Thug Life. "These guys were not even born when Mani Ratnam started making films. What qualification do they have to condemn him today?" he asked. His remarks have not gone down well with many movie-goers, who have asked him if he was an authority who dishes out eligibility certificates.
In a way, Telugu filmmakers are big talkers, which is why most of them get trolled mercilessly. Since they get to air their opinions in public due to ubiquitous YouTube channels, their audience go through the kind of annoyance Anurag Kashyap experiences in private.
