‘Gana Kokila’ P Suseela is celebrating her 75th birthday on November 13th. This melody queen sang record number of songs in all the South Indian languages as well as Hindi in her 40 years of film career. She formed a distinctive trademark in singing – be it a romantic song or a devotional song, sad or masala number.
Smt P Suseela started her singing career in 1950 by lending her voice for a duet with AM Raja in a Tamil film called ‘Edhukku Azhaithaai’. Later she got the opportunity to sing in a Telugu film ‘Pelli Chesi Choodu’ in 1952. In the year 1955, films like ‘Missamma’, ‘Anarkali’, ‘Kanyasulkam’ and ‘Donga Ramudu’ completely changed her life and after that there was no stopping her. She lent her sweet voice (as sweet as honey) for some thousands of songs and won many state and national awards.
In 2001, the great singer was honoured by the AP Government with Raghupathi Venkaiah award for lifetime achievement in Telugu cinema. In 2008 she received the prestigious Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. This marvelous singer dedicated her voice to the film industry for more than four decades.
