Tharun Bhascker's Gaaya Padda Simham is directed by debutant Kasyap Sreenivas. Backed by Pavan Sadineni as presenter, the film is produced by Kalyan Chakravarthy Manthina, Bhanu Kiran Pratap, Vijay Krishna Lingamaneni, and Umesh Bansal under Sapta Aswa Media Works, POV Stories, and Zee Studios. Ahead of its May 1 release, actor JD Chakravarthy talks about the movie.
I always look for a challenge in a character arc. That is what excites any actor. Dharma is my name in the movie. The kind of roles done by Kamal Haasan have not been done by anyone else. But in this film, in terms of character shades, even he hasn't played such a part in his career. It is that different. Usually, a character shows one shade in the first half and another in the second. Here, Dharma appears the same in both halves, yet reveals two different shades. You will understand it only after watching the film. I didn’t struggle much for it. The strength was already there in the writing.
I have never rushed into films in my career. I have been like that from the beginning. I take up a project only if I like the story. A film works only when the story works. In Shiva, my character became my identity. People may not recognize the name Chakravarthy, but they recognize JD Chakravarthy. Characters like Bhavani, Satya, Bhiku Mhatre, Kallumama stayed with audiences. But if the story doesn’t work, the characters won’t last. Even if they do, the film won’t succeed. My favorite role is from Wife of V. Varaprasad. That character worked, but the film didn’t. In Gaaya Padda Simham, Dharma, Tarun Bhascker’s Dharahas, and another character come together in a very interesting way.
Kasyap has good experience with short films and web series. I like his style. He is very confident. He has made this film with realistic and hilarious humor. My character is called 'Brutal' Dharma. But what I do on screen will make the audience laugh. This is a director’s film. There are many directors in it, including myself, Tarun Bhascker, and Pavan Sadineni. But Kasyap made the film exactly the way he wanted. We didn’t give inputs. He shot it exactly as he narrated. When I heard the story for the first time, I kept laughing throughout.
I will definitely do experimental films again. I love acting. I don’t differentiate between hero and villain roles. If the story feels new, I want to do it.
