Hyderabad, October 27, 2015……“In life you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.” FICCI FLO Hyderabad organised a Workshop and Learning Session on Art of Negotiation here in city today at Hotel ITC Kakatiya. It was conducted by Professor Abhay Dixit visiting Professor to IIM Ahmedabad.
Addressing the gathering Prof. Abhay Dixit said “women are better negotiators than the men”. There are historical reasons for the same. Men may be better negotiators out of sheer money or muscle power, but, women always use better negotiating skills to get what they want, he said. Out of necessity, women develop better negotiating skills, he said.
If you are doing an important negotiations, switch off like mobile and other and focus on the negotiation. If you do multitasking, it will be difficult to come back to the same state of the mind. And as a result of which you will fail to get what you want to get out of the negotiation, Prof. Abhay Dixit said.
Speaking further, Prof Dixit said all communications except few are negotiations. There are very few communications which are not negotiations. The most potential negotiating skills is “listening”, he said.
We communicate to get desired results. In a similar way, why we negotiate is to make other party to accept what we want, he said. Negotiation skill can be learnt. Many years back people felt that could management and communications skills be learnt. But, now we have accepted that we can learn. In a similar fashion “Negotiation Skills” can be learnt. Infact, nobody had heard much about it ten years back. But, today it is an important management tool. In last twenty years lot of work has been done in this area of specialization. Now many premier management colleges like IIMs have full time faculty, Prof Dixit said.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering Rekha Lahoti, Chairperson of FLO Hyderabad Chapter said four of its members had gone for FLO foreign delegation to Iceland and Austria. These are great opportunities for members to bond and network, she said. Similarly a 30 members delegation, the biggest ever from the city is going for FLO interstate to Guwahati & Kaziranga National park from 4th – 7th Dec.
Speaking about the day’s session, Rekha Lahoti Negotiations is something we use it in our daily life with family, friends, at work place and for all interpersonal relationships, she said.
Adding further Rekha stated that, Negotiation is a universal human activity as we all engage in bargaining at one level or another on a pretty regular basis. While we all need good negotiation skills in business, these skills are valuable in our personal lives as well.
Negotiation can be broken down into three basic activities: assessing value, creating value and capturing value.
Creating value is about making the pie bigger, while capturing value is about getting the largest possible slice for the negotiators.
Negotiation is one topic in which everyone one of us are involved every day or other. It is very important as negotiating skills can contribute highly in our daily lives. Negotiation can be learned, and can be improved radically with practice, informed Rekha.
Addressing the gathering Prof. Abhay Dixit focused on, The deal you want to make, how to negotiate for any situation by leveraging your emotions. He has also dealt on how to enhance your negotiation skills and get the deal you want every time. Whether it is handling your domestic staff, shopping or is it in any other relationship.
Getting to yes and getting what you want, when you want it, at the price you want is the most sought after skill. Not all are good at it. But, at the same time it is not a rocket science as well. With little bit understanding of the subject and equipped proper skills everybody could be master it. Negotiation is part of our everyday life. But, in business it is very critical to your success. Poor negotiations can cost a Bomb, cripple a company or event force to lose the customers.
Negotiating may seem like a common sense, but it is very common for people to get caught in the circle. Emotion, luck, magic nothing will help. Good homework, proper preparation and proper negotiation skills can get the best deal possible under any circumstances.
