Raja Harishchandra release marks 100 yrs of Indian Cinema

‘Raja Harischandra’, written, directed and produced by the Indian icon Dadasaheb Phalke was the first full-length Indian feature flim that got released on 3rd May, 1913. The film was released at Coronation theater in Mumbai with a single print and the run time was 40 minutes. It’s a silent film based on the life history of King Harischandra. Marathi stage artist DD Dabke portrayed the title role. The female lead role of Harischandra’s wife Taramati was also essayed by a male artist Anna Salunke. Harischandra’s son Rohtash role was played by Dada Saheb Phalke’s son Bhalachandra D Phalke and GV Sane played Sage Vishwamitra. The film was premiered on 21st April, 1913 at the Olympia Theatre, Grant Road for top film personalities of Mumbai and editors of leading newspapers.
