Lata Mangeshkar passes away; Chiranjeevi, others condole

Legendary and celebrated playback singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last today at a private hospital in Mumbai at the age of 92. She was being treated for Covid-induced complications in the ICU. She was put on a ventilator and aggressive therapy was being given.

Lata's demise has shocked the country. A Bharat Ratna, the singer sang thousands of songs. Her death due to Covid-19 reminds people of the demise of another legend who was lost to the virus: SP Balasubrahmanyam.

Celebs, politicians, fans and others are putting out condolence messages across social media platforms. In his condolence tweet, Megastar Chiranjeevi wrote that the Nightingale of India was one of the greatest legends. "Heartbroken. The vacuum due to this colossal loss can never be filled. She lived an extraordinary life. Her music lives on and will continue to cast a spell until music is there," the 'Acharya' actor added.

Prime Minister Modi wrote, "I consider it my honour that I have always received immense affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi. Spoke to her family and expressed condolences. Om Shanti."

President of India Ramnath Kovind said that Lata's demise is heart-breaking for him as it is for millions the world over. "In her vast range of songs, rendering the essence and beauty of India, generations found expression of their inner-most emotions," he wrote.

The Government of India has announced two-day national mourning.
