In a recent interview, Pavan Goparaju, Co-founder at C Space Global (actor Navdeep's agency), told a YouTube channel that new film producers tend to trust individuals rather than institutions. He was reflecting on the question: Why can't the functions carried out by Executive Producers be institutionalized so that new producers can gain from honest, experienced hands?
Many Executive Producers allegedly dupe new producers, particularly NRI Telugus who make movies out of a passion for cinema. These newcomers have no prior knowledge of the economics of filmmaking. Whatever the EP tells them, they believe it to be true. Many EPs allegedly quote exorbitant amounts in the name of quality. By the time half the movie is done, the budget has exceeded the initial outlay.
A sincere, competent EP Is supposed to keep the producer informed about all the challenges, right from production costs to release expenses. Most outsiders just commission a project without much insight because they believe they have a great story to tell. Many of them want to launch a family member as a hero. They don't even know of VPF-related expenses, theatre rentals, etc. They burn their hands and almost end up bankrupt. Something resembling a studio culture needs to be replicated on the EP front. Will it ever happen, though?
