Here is why stars like Chiranjeevi, Mahesh Babu don't own IPL teams

Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are the most prominent actor-owners who co-own Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) through Red Chillies Entertainment and the Mehta Group. Preity Zinta is the long-standing face and co-owner of Punjab Kings. They have made huge profits from their ownership of the teams.

Why didn't southern superstars like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Nagarjuna, Rajinikanth, Venkatesh, or younger ones like Mahesh Babu not invest in an IPL franchise when auctions first took place in 2008? A major reason is that they didn't get a chance, with corporates like Sun TV, Deccan Chronicle, and India Cements being early movers. These are well-connected players, and our stars stood no chance. SRK probably didn't face competition, as nobody gave IPL teams much chance beyond the top 2-3. His team incurred losses at the start.

Many South superstars are cricket fans (particularly Venkatesh), but ownership is a different beast: huge upfront capital, operational headaches, and no guaranteed returns. Early IPL teams mostly lost money.

Also, South stars were not exactly inclined to diversify their portfolio. If they had enough money, they poured their earnings back into big-budget films, production houses, or local businesses instead. At the end of the day, a mix of timing, networks, personal/business priorities, and how the IPL ecosystem evolved contributed to the absence of southern superstars in IPL.
