After the trailer for Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana dropped around late last month, netizens heavily revived trolling and comparisons with Prabhas’ 2023 Adipurush. The Om Raut-directed Prabhas movie started trending again on social media (especially X), largely for negative reasons. People posted memes, side-by-side comparisons of VFX/CGI, character looks, dialogues, and overall execution. Common themes included calling Ramayana a much stronger or more authentic take and questioning how Adipurush ever made it to theaters. Jokes about Adipurush being a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” no one wants to repeat, or roasting specific elements like its dialogues and visuals. Framing the new trailer as a kind of “redemption” or higher bar for mythological adaptations after the backlash Adipurush faced in 2023.
This has given rise to an interesting theory. The marketing team behind the Ranbir Kapoor-Yash-Sai Pallavi movie could well be behind all of this. "By reminding people of Adipurush, the makers might be trying to make their own film look better in comparison. This also plays into the Bollywood vs. southern cinema politics. Since Prabhas is a Telugu hero, no Bollywood relations get affected," a netizen commented.
