Hollywood media reports say that Barbie 2 may never happen. Warner Bros. and the core creative team (read director Greta Gerwig, co-writer Noah Baumbach, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling) are reportedly "locked in a major compensation dispute".
Here are the details: Warner Bros. has made at least six separate offers over the past three years. One of the offers was a record-high package. The creative team rejected all of them. "The talent is holding out for a much higher upfront pay and better backend percentages, with Gosling reportedly asking for $20 million upfront to return as Ken," a Variety report stated.
Warner Bros. faces a strict deadline to put a sequel into active development. "If deal contracts aren't signed and production isn't greenlit before the rights agreement expires, the movie rights revert back to Mattel," a report adds. For those who don't know, Mattel is an American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company founded in 1945. It created Barbie.
