AI, VFX, and the Enduring Power of Human Imagination

Lately, on social media, a number of videos show AI creations mimicking action choreography of the kind seen in major Hollywood films, such as The Matrix franchise. "A single Matrix-style scene costs $10M+ in Hollywood. But it is created in 2 minutes with one prompt," an X user wrote, sharing one such video.

So, is it the death of cinema production then? Many disagree. "The only reason we recognize this shot is because the Matrix has emotional resonance with us. We know Neo. We know Agent Smith. Without the story of the Matrix, or the brand elements that we recognize, this is just two dudes fighting, and no one cares about that. Hollywood isn't cooked because of AI, just like Hollywood wasn't cooked because of VFX," a movie buff argued. Vinay Aravind wrote, "AI boosters don't realise that budget and tech are only two factors. Imagination, judgment and taste are more important. That's why the Lord of the Rings trilogy looks better than so many films coming out 25 years later. So the fact it can copy an iconic sequence half-decently counts for little."

Critics of AI might be missing something here. Even though several Hollywood blockbusters from the last decade had VFX that didn't surpass the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they still performed well at the box office.
