Trade analysts have estimated that the Indian market has become the largest international opening weekend market for the horror film Evil Dead: Burn. This is the first time a Hollywood movie has achieved this milestone in the region.
During its debut weekend, the movie surpassed the opening numbers of other prominent titles like Obsession and The Mummy in India. "The film built momentum quickly, starting with Thursday previews that brought in Rs 54 lakh. It followed with Rs 2.70 crore on Friday, Rs 4.41 crore on Saturday, and Rs 4.95 crore on Sunday. This resulted in a net box office collection of Rs 12.60 crore and a gross total of Rs 15.36 crore," trade analyst Taran Adarsh said.
The film had a reported budget around $20M (pre-marketing), with a decent but not blockbuster US opening (~$13M+). India’s performance stands out relative to other markets.
The movie follows a grieving widow who visits her in-laws at their secluded home. The gathering turns into a nightmare when demonic forces from the Book of the Dead transform the family members into Deadites. Evil Dead: Burn is directed by Sébastien Vaniček, who co-wrote the script with Florent Bernard. It is produced by franchise creator Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. The horror film features a talented main cast including Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, and Luciane Buchanan.
