Kiran Abbavaram has described his film K-Ramp as bearing plot similarities with Obsession, the recent American supernatural thriller that went on to mint $1.2 billion. By saying so, the actor has drawn ridicule online.
The Telugu film and the English-language one have a genuine surface-level similarity, but they couldn't be more different in tone and genre. Both films center on a woman whose love interest is behaving erratically because of an underlying condition; and the male lead misreads it, at least initially, as something else (or is slow to understand it) rather than a serious problem needing real help. The female lead in Obsession becomes supernaturally obsessed due to a cursed wish. K-Ramp involves a woman (played by Yukti Thareja) who lives with PTSD and emotional trauma.
Films have to be judged based on their subtext, sincerity, and narrative integrity. Superficial similarities don't count. K-Ramp was cringe, although it did become a festival hit at the box office.
