Maa Behen: Spirit heroine Tripti, Madhuri Dixit earn praises

Maa Behen is the title of the latest Hindi-language black comedy thriller film streaming on Netflix. Madhuri Dixit, Animal fame Triptii Dimri, Dharna Durga (a content creator), and Ravi Kishan (seen in this week's Peddi) have played major roles in it.

Multiple reviews have mentioned that the movie starts strong but loses momentum in the middle. The screenplay is described by some as flabby, slow, and repetitive, making the 2-hour runtime feel longer than it is. Some critics felt that the dark-comedy thriller aspect didn't fully rise to its potential. A few reviews noted that the mystery elements and the final resolution wrap up with a weak "slap on the wrist" for the antagonist rather than a powerful pushback.

The trio of Madhuri Dixit (the Bollywood superstar of the 1990s cinema needs no introduction), Triptii Dimri (who is currently also doing Sandeep Reddy Vanga-Prabhas' Spirit), and Dharna Durga is widely considered the film's biggest strength. Critics note an electric, unhinged, and believable mother-daughter chemistry between them. As per a national daily, the film gets points for how it "targets internalised patriarchy, moral policing, and society's deep discomfort with independent women who refuse to play the victim".

Maa Behen also features Geetanjali Kulkarni, Arunoday Singh and others. Suresh Triveni has directed it.
