Peddi, Raaka, Kalki: The challenge of keeping surprises under wraps

The major twist in Peddi was revealed by sections of the media as early as 2022, when the project was still associated with Jr NTR. The story was later pitched to Ram Charan, but by then, key plot details had already made their way into public discussion.

Buchi Babu Sana's previous directorial, Uppena, faced a similar situation. The film's shocking climax involving the castration of the male lead was widely reported by media outlets weeks before its release. In today's social media-driven environment, preserving surprises has become increasingly difficult. Tollywood web portals frequently publish blind items and exclusive reports that reveal genres, casting choices, and even crucial plot points long before films hit the screens.

Ideally, certain character appearances and roles should remain complete surprises. For instance, Venkatesh's role in Mana Shankara Vara Prasad would have had a far greater impact if it had been revealed only after the film's release. However, such secrecy is nearly impossible in the current cinema news-crazy environment. Reports regularly track actors' movements and shooting schedules. Karthi's cameo in HIT 3 is a recent example.

Movie enthusiasts are praising director Nag Ashwin for successfully keeping the climax of Kalki 2898 AD under wraps despite the industry's notoriously leaky environment. Similarly, the makers of the Allu ArjunAtlee film have earned appreciation for maintaining complete secrecy around the project. Even the title, Raaka, remained unknown until the official poster was unveiled.
