The franchise movie has received split reviews. The negative reviews in the Hollywood media point out that at over 140 minutes, the movie feels stretched out. "There is also a bit of a tonal identity crisis where the film tries to sneak in serious undercurrents about modern masculinity and father-son dynamics, but then immediately undercuts the emotion with a crude double entendre or a meta-joke," a review wrote.

The world-building, however, has received positive comments. The world of Eternia looks incredibly vibrant, glossy, and faithful to the original toy lines. "The fight scenes are well-choreographed and energetic, avoiding the flat CGI look of recent superhero films, though a few major set pieces toward the end do get a little bloated," a critic opined.
The tonality is alright. "The movie tries to strike a balance between a sincere '80s adventure and a self-aware parody. It uses a very Marvel-style approach," a publication observed. Masters of the Universe frequently makes fun of the "property's own ridiculousness". Some critics find this hilarious and refreshing, while others think the script feels a bit too embarrassed by its own source material.
