"Every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity. We remain committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values," wrote Peddi director Buchi Babu Sana, announcing the removal of objectionable portions in his movie. Scenes involving double-meaning one-liners, the objectification of Janhvi Kapoor, and/or the romanticization of forcible kissing are going to be trimmed from the movie shortly.
After Peddi's release on June 3, outrage followed online, with many audience members describing the portions as "disgusting", "tasteless", "problematic", and "cheap".
The question is, will this rare admission by the maker of a big-ticket movie alter the course of such scenes in Telugu cinema. Problematic romantic tracks have existed in our films for decades. However, rarely has any filmmaker come out on Day 3 of release to sort of apologize and promise removal.
There are only two possibilities. The team behind Peddi, particularly Ram Charan, is genuinely remorseful. The other possibility is that the decision is pragmatic, driven by feedback about the 3-hour-long run-time. So, they must be burning down the Janhvi portions not because those scenes are most problematic but because they are least relevant.
