Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia has joined ZEE5's expert panel for the FIFA World Cup 2026. For the unversed, he is widely considered the torchbearer of modern Indian football. Hailing from Tinkitam in Sikkim, his rise from a remote Himalayan village to the international stage fundamentally changed the landscape of the sport in India during the 1990s and 2000s.

The former captain is elated. He called the FIFA World Cup a tournament that goes beyond sport itself. In his view, it brings people together through a shared love of the game and has given generations of Indian fans memories they will never forget. Bhutia said he is happy to work alongside ZEE5 and Unite8 Sports to help fans feel closer to the action. He wants to "unpack the rivalries, stories, and defining moments that make the World Cup so compelling". Nicknamed the "Sikkimese Sniper" for his clinical finishing inside the box, Bhutia earned over eighty caps for the Indian national team and scored forty-two goals. ZEE5's coverage of the World Cup begins on June 11. The tournament also marks the start of a significant long-term deal between Zee Entertainment and FIFA. The partnership runs through 2034 and covers some of the biggest competitions in the sport. Alongside the 2026 edition, the agreement includes the FIFA World Cup 2030, the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, and several other major international tournaments. Zee Entertainment will broadcast through both ZEE5 and its Unite8 platform. Fans can follow the action in English, Hindi, Bangla, and Malayalam. The aim is to make every match accessible to viewers across different regions.
Bhaichung Bhutia has also been honored with the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award for his immense contributions to Indian sports.
