Los Angeles is reportedly losing its edge. The global capital of entertainment is facing numerous challenges, a recent report by Variety says, listing out the reasons for why the Hollywood citadel is losing its sheen.
Production costs in LA have skyrocketed, driven by high labor rates and strict operational rules. The Hollywood industry is hyper-regulated, pushing many producers away.
States other than California in the US are trying to cash in. On top of it, Los Angeles is facing competition from international hubs that have "built highly competitive crew bases and massive financial incentives". For instance, the UK spent 2.2 billion dollars on film and TV subsidies in 2024.
High-profile projects moving entirely overseas or to lower-cost regions has become a threat. Major examples include the new Avengers films shooting in London, a Scrubs reboot filming in British Columbia, and Netflix's upcoming Little House on the Prairie revival being shot in Winnipeg to stack regional and labor tax credits, the report by Variety observes.
The LA county has experienced the largest population losses in the US. Recent Census data shows a net loss of about 53,000 residents between July 2024 and July 2025. The county's population has fallen from around 10 million in 2020 to roughly 9.7 million.
