A young man has reportedly injected a woman with HIV-infected blood after she refused to marry him. The crime took place in Hyderabad's Pocharam locality. The woman’s marriage had previously been fixed with a man named Manohar. However, she called off the wedding after discovering that Manohar was HIV-positive. On March 11, Manohar went to the woman's house and pressured her to marry him. When she refused, he injected her with HIV-infected blood. The accused is currently in police custody.
A similar incident was depicted in the recent movie, Raju Weds Rambai. In the film, a character gets injected HIV-infected blood. The film shows HIV as a death sentence. The irresponsible representation of HIV as a stigma and a disease with no treatment deserved criticism. HIV treatment is real and affordable in India. Government hospitals provide free medicine as well.
Raju Weds Rambai was based on a true incident.
