Dhanush's Kara and the Hyderabad bank scam have a parallel

The theatrical release of Dhanush's latest thriller, Kara, coincided with a real-world revelation by the Cyberabad Police. While Kara features a fictional betrayal unfold on the big screen, law enforcement officials told the media they had cracked down on an insider banking fraud under Operation Crackdown.

In the film, the protagonist faces a cunning villain hidden deep within the system. This black sheep abuses his authority. The Cyberabad Police uncovered a racket involving bank employees who compromised sensitive customer data across three bank branches in Hyderabad. These insiders helped cyber criminals operate mule accounts, open bank accounts without KYC, etc. The uncanny resemblance is broad and not specific.

Kara, helmed by Vignesh Raja, has received mixed reviews. Most reviewers felt the "slow-burn heist thriller" of the first half shifted into a "generic vigilante drama" in the second. Cinema Express noted it took a "safe route to conformity." Dhanush, however, came in for universal praise. Critics across the board, including The Times of India and The Hindu, praised him for a "vanity-free" and "intense" performance.
