'Lord of the Flies': Critics call it Netflix’s best drama of 2026

Netflix’s Lord of the Flies has emerged as one of the most talked-about television series of the year. Critics across the West are praising the drama for its "unsettling realism, emotional intensity, and modern political relevance".

The series is based on William Golding’s classic 1954 novel about a group of schoolboys stranded on a remote island after a disaster. As order collapses, fear and violence begin to take over. Writer Jack Thorne, known for acclaimed dramas such as Adolescence, leads the adaptation. Director Marc Munden has also received praise for creating a "tense and haunting atmosphere".

Several young newcomers headline the cast, including Casper Knopf and Amari Bacchus. Critics say the performances feel raw and authentic rather than polished. "Its setting is largely stripped of contemporary or antiquated trappings. Its story is basic and broad, easily absorbed on its own yet packed with lessons about life," Indiewire wrote.

A USA Today review described the show as “the best TV series of the year.” Other critics echoed that sentiment. Reviewers from entertainment outlets praised its "visual storytelling and psychological depth". Many said the series captures "modern anxieties surrounding tribalism, toxic masculinity, and social breakdown".
