In Mareechika, director Satish Kasetty (whose Hope won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues in 2006) has attempted a genre-bending storyline. From the movie's trailer, it would seem that a murder has taken place and nobody has a clue as to what happened. Or, better still, did a murder take place in the first place?
Anupama Parameswaran plays Venkata Laxmi, a village belle with innocence and harmlessness written all over her personality. She has a platonic relationship with Sanju (Viraj Ashwin, of Baby fame). The third pole completing the triangular plot is Regina Cassandra, who plays the titular character who has just dropped from the US. An investigative thriller, a murder mystery and a story of betrayal rolled into one, this one has a lot going for it.
Maestro Ilaiyaraaja has composed the music. Rajiv Chilaka, Meghhaa Chilakka of Chilaka Productions have bankrolled the project. Lakshmi Bhupala has penned the dialogue and lyrics. Edited by Junaid Siddiqui, the film's art direction is by Vithal Kosanam.
Expect Mareechika to be a postmodern, emotionally-driven psychological crime thriller that subverts traditional romance tropes. You can expect a sharp, unsettling tonal shift where the narrative pivots drastically into a dark, suspenseful murder mystery.
Mareechika will head to theatres on May 29.
