“I am also waiting hopefully for the second instalment of Karuppu to be produced. I believe updates on it will be revealed soon,” Suriya shared on Tuesday, hinting at a sequel to his latest blockbuster. The fantasy action drama was released in Telugu as Veera Bhadrudu.
The massive success of Karuppu in Tamil has surprised the actor, who had been reeling under the failure of movies like Kanguva and Retro. He badly needed a hit and the answer came in the form of the RJ Balaji directorial.
However, does Karuppu have enough gravitas and potential for a sequel? No, if the generic nature of the action blocks in the film is anything to go by. While the premise is excellent and some of the scenes depicting judicial corruption are spot-on, the second half is not fully developed. Usually, sequels to even solid movies tend to be flat. Karuppu 2 will have to do a lot and not rest on laurels. Suriya should be presented in a better fashion in the sequel. A different backdrop (like healthcare) is expected.
Karuppu, starring RJ Balaji in a negative role, has grossed Rs 170 Cr so far. The Telugu version, too, is a hit. Had Samantha's Maa Inti Bangaram clashed with it, its Telugu collections would have been affected.
