The blue robotic cat Doraemon is finally heading to multiplexes after attracting kids for 21 years on Indian TV. Doraemon: Castle of the Undersea Devil releases nationwide on October 2.
The project marks the franchise’s first-ever theatrical outing in the country. TV Asahi (a Japanese television station) and PVR INOX Pictures are bringing the 45th Doraemon feature. It is already a solid performer in Japan.
The Indian version will release in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Select 4DX screenings have been planned for an "immersive undersea adventure".
Chatter around the new edition has centered on nostalgia and milestone status. Fans who grew up with the show are sharing childhood memories while introducing the character to a new generation of kids. A 360-degree campaign led by Black White Orange has fueled excitement through school outreach programs, mall activations, outdoor ads, branded vehicles, radio, retail tie-ups, and a high-energy Mumbai premiere on September 26.
Social media posts highlight anticipation for bookings and family outings, positioning the release as more than just another kids’ film.
The question is, will Doraemon threaten Tom Cruise's Digger and Anne Hathaway's Verity at the Indian BO? Neither Hollywood film is likely threatened by Doraemon in the Indian market. Their competition is primarily with each other and other adult/prestige titles, not a Japanese kids’ anime.
