Ranabaali Teaser: Vijay Deverakonda's film feels stuck in Sye Raa's shadow

The teaser for Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali arrives with little to distinguish it. Billed as a period action drama, it leans heavily on the well-worn conventions that have come to define British-era-set Telugu cinema: sepia-toned villages, oppressive redcoats, and a hero destined to rise against colonial tyranny. None of it feels new.

In tone and texture, the teaser is unmistakably Sye Raa-coded. The visual grammar, the depiction of British cruelty, and the dramatic unveiling of Vijay's titular character all tread familiar ground. Director Rahul Sankrityan appears to have drawn his narrative from exaggerated folklore, the kind Indian cinema has revisited in the past. Unless a genuine surprise awaits, perhaps a supernatural dimension to Vijay's character, the film currently offers little to grip audiences with.

The action choreography, helmed by Yannick Ben, Andy Long Nguyen, and Rabin Subbu, looks derivative rather than distinctive. Arnold Vosloo's portrayal of a savage colonial officer, too, feels like a type audiences have seen many times before.

Ranabaali, positioned as a pan-Indian release, opens in theatres on October 16.
