Netizens have voiced strong doubts over Rashmika Mandanna’s casting as MS Subbulakshmi, the legendary singer. Many feel she is unsuited for the iconic role. Their primary choice remains Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, who was last seen in Telugu as NT Rama Rao's wife in the NTR biopic duology. Netizens argue her presence and range make her the ideal fit for the Carnatic vocalist.
Others point to Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth as apt alternatives. Both actresses, they say, could bring the required grace and elegance. Rukmini, however, has no proven acting range. For that matter, Rashmika is more talented. Her face card is simply not as widely acclaimed as Rukmini’s.
Despite the criticism, director Gowtam Tinnanuri (of Jersey fame) could surprise with his handling of the biopic. Similar doubts were expressed when Keerthy Suresh was roped in for Nag Ashwin's Mahanati. That Savitri biopic went on to earn widespread praise. Many hope this project follows the same path. The final verdict will rest on the finished film.
