Bhama Kalapam is a hit and I am extremely satisfied: Priyamani

'Bhama Kalapam' started streaming on AHA the other day. In this interview, protagonist Priyamani talks about the response for the crime comedy thriller, her character in 'Virata Parvam', her other upcoming movies, and more.

I am extremely satisfied with the response. I have been flooded with positive responses on social media and everywhere. My look, the feel of the film, the story, and all have been lauded.

The main point that attracted me is the script and the narration style. The execution was entirely in keeping with the narration. A script of this sort is one of its kind in the OTT universe. Moreover, I haven't played such a role before.

The wordplay on the word 'guddu' (egg) was interesting. That's why the humour between my character and John Vijay's character worked.

This is the first time that I have played this kind of a naive, innocent character. I have only played other kinds of characters. I had to analyze how a middle-class housewife behaves, her body language, etc. In my personal life, I don't even know who live in my neighbourhood. I don't like to be nosy in real life. And I have zero knowledge of cooking. My husband cooks and I eat (smiles). He never asks me to cook. That way I am very lucky. So, playing a YouTube cook in 'Bhama Kalapam' felt new.

I play a character only if I am convinced that I can do it. Otherwise, I don't take it up. Anupama, the central character in 'Bhama Kalapam', was definitely not close to my heart. But I took it up as a challenge to play a new sort of character. I am so unlike Anupama in real life.

My takeaway from doing the film is that you shouldn't be nosy. Don't be like Anupama. It's a bad habit to interfere in others' lives. I was very confident about the story. The narration of the scenes intrigued me.

My husband has watched the film. He is in the US currently. He found me beautiful in the saree. He asked me to do comical roles in the future, too. That's the biggest compliment.

Female actors are increasingly receiving meaningful roles in Tollywood. Earlier, heroines were relegated only to songs. These days, substantial roles are being written.

I am not satisfied. I am hungry. I want to play a full-length villain role. I am all for playing unconventional roles.

For actors, OTTs are a very good option. Films are coming out on OTT. In the current situation (pandemic), OTTs are the best. Women-oriented subjects are being written for OTT content. The variety of roles that we see on OTTs is wide-ranging. In films, the range hasn't been wide. OTTs offer a wide range of choices.

'Virata Parvam' is going to be released soon. Bharatakka is a powerful character. We, including Rana Daggubati, play Naxals. It's a special role and I am part of Rana's team. She is the glue of the team. I am doing 'Maidaan' in Hindi with Ajay Devgn sir. I am doing 'Quotation Gang' in Tamil. 'Family Man 3' is also there. I am also doing a Kannada film.
