For the first time, Superstar Rajinikanth has teamed up with ace director A.R.Murugadoss for the movie 'Darbar'. This 'super combo' has generated unprecedented buzz and the film has finally released today. Is this movie worth the wait? Here is our opinion.

Story

Aaditya Arunachalam (Rajinikanth), the commissioner of Police, Mumbai, decides to eliminate all the criminals as he doesn't know who is responsible for the death of his daughter Valli (Nivetha Thomas). The self confessed bad cop is on a killing spree and Human Rights Commission (HRC) tries to put the brakes on him. He is also on the brink of suspension. Will Arunachalam find out his daughter's killer before he gets suspended?

Performances

Rajinikanth's screen presence is as magnificent as ever. He lights up the screen with his inimitable style and attitude. We get to see a vintage Rajinikanth in many scenes. It's unbelievable that he is 70. Nivetha Thomas gets a good role as Rajini's daughter and she performs very well in an emotional scene that comes in the second half. Suneil Shetty as a villain looks stylish but his role disappoints as it is not etched well. Nayanthara has nothing much to do in the movie and her scenes with Rajinikanth look out of place. Yogi Babu's comedy is good here and there. Prateik Babbar and others fit the bill.

Technical aspects

Anirudh Ravichander's background score is one of the strengths of the movie. Legend Santosh Sivan's cinematography is another asset. The production values are grand.

Plus Points

Rajinikanth
Nivetha Thomas' emotional scenes
Few action scenes

Minus Points

Weak villain
Rushed climax

Analysis

A.R.Murugadoss is known for creating strong villains for his heroes. But surprisingly, Suneil Shetty's role is weakly etched. Rajinikanth looks much younger in this movie and with his great screen presence will be a treat for his fans. After a good first half, everyone expects an engaging second half. But except for some good emotional scenes featuring Nivetha Thomas and Rajini, there is nothing much intriguing. The climax was rushed.

On the whole, 'Darbar' is a film for hardcore Rajinikanth fans. They will definitely enjoy it.
