RGV fails to get sympathy despite controversy

Ram Gopal Varma's films court controversies as often as Rajamouli's films get postponed. Many sections of audience come to know of the existence of his films because of controversies. 'Maa Ishtam', too, has courted a row.

The film, which is slated to hit the cinemas on April 8, is touted to be India's first lesbian crime drama. For whatever reason, PVR and INOX have conveyed to the makers of 'Maa Ishtam' that the film won't be screened in their multiplexes.

Speaking at the pre-release event of the film on Wednesday, an angry RGV stated that the multiplexes have refused to screen his lesbian crime drama despite a 2018 order by the Supreme Court decriminalizing homosexuality. "The CBFC has cleared my film," he added.

In a filmi style, RGV delivered a punchline. "You can't stop the Sun with your hand," Varma said, drawing mild laughs.

Does RGV believe that there is going to be a collections Tsunami on Friday? Whatever may be the answer, one thing is clear. Varma has failed to draw sympathy for himself and his movie despite the controversy.
