Cannes Film Festival 2025: Nudity is banned

The Cannes Film Festival 2025 has imposed a ban on nudity. Besides, voluminous dresses can't be worn by guests attending the upcoming event. This is a notable shift in its red carpet policy, driven by concerns over "decency" and logistical issues like traffic flow and seating.

Many are surprised by the move. Even the Met Gala and other high-profile pop culture events haven't imposed a ban on nudity before. Cannes’ dress code has sparked debates, often due to enforcement rather than explicit bans on specific styles. For example, in 2015, reports surfaced that women were turned away for wearing flats instead of heels, prompting backlash from certain celebs.

The Academy Awards (read Oscars) maintain a formal dress code but haven’t explicitly banned nudity or voluminous dresses. The Oscars tend to rely on public and media feedback to shape future attire indirectly. The Venice Film Festival is considered less rigid than Cannes, and it has no history of banning specific dress styles. Stars like Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet have worn daring looks without issue.
