Kuberaa: Sekhar Kammula's weighty themes might alienate Telugu audience

Kuberaa appears to be a commentary on the unchecked nature of capitalism and the increasing displacement of the middle class in an increasingly competitive world. If its latest video glimpse, titled Trance of Kuberaa, is any indication, this will be Sekhar Kammula's most intense film to date. While Love Story featured an intense finale, Kuberaa seems to be significantly more intense.

Sekhar Kammula, judging by some of his older social media posts, has expressed little sympathy for right-wing economic policies. In Kuberaa, Jim Sarbh seems to portray an antagonist embodying an evil version of capitalism. Dhanush's character stands at the opposite end of the spectrum, with Nagarjuna's character positioned somewhere in the middle. Kuberaa could offer a dramatic exploration of the power dynamics involving this trio.

It is notable that Kammula chose Telugu cinema to tell stories such as Fidaa, Happy Days, and Life Is Beautiful, but has opted for Tamil cinema to narrate Kuberaa. Even if the film were to underperform in Telugu due to its weighty themes, it is highly likely to generate profits in Tamil. With Telugu heroes often involved in perpetually delayed projects, Kammula could continue collaborating with Tamil heroes for the foreseeable future.

Kuberaa, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, will head to theatres on June 20.
