Neo-noir has never been easy territory, even for filmmakers with decades of experience behind them. As a Hollywood critic once wrote, it "demands restraint over spectacle, mood over mass moments, and a willingness to let silence and shadow do the talking". In Telugu cinema, where commercial formulas around comedy, romance, and larger-than-life heroism dominate box office expectations, attempting neo-noir is close to swimming against the current.
This is exactly the challenge Ram Pothineni has walked into with his directorial debut, RAPO23. His recent outings, Andhra King Taluka and RED, never quite tapped into the potential they seemed to promise on paper. Both had ideas worth exploring but ended up feeling incomplete in execution. Choosing a neo-noir psychological thriller for his first film behind the camera is, in that sense, a bold correction rather than a safe bet.
If Ram manages to look genuinely gritty in RAPO23, stripped of his usual polish, it will count as a real win. The film, produced by Krishna Pothineni, has completed its second schedule.
By the way, three other heroes are directing their upcoming movies: Kiran Abbavaram (Reality), Vishwak Sen (Cult), and Kartikeya Gumamkonda (Comeback). Cult is a slasher film.
