Would it be wise to convert 'Tillu' into a franchise?

'Tillu Square' is slated to hit the cinemas on March 29. With the postponement of 'Devara' from April 5 and owing to other factors such as the timing of release (it is early Summer), distributors are said to be betting big on the film. Sithara Entertainments is expected to rake in comfortable table profits even if the banner goes by the lowest price on offer. The film being a sequel to 'DJ Tillu', one of the best crime comedies of Telugu cinema, is boosting its commercial viability like anything.

Netizens are wondering if it is the time to convert Tillu into a franchise. The jury is out on it. If 'Tillu Square' becomes a proper hit at the box-office, grossing something like Rs 50 Cr, Siddu Jonnalagadda and producer S Naga Vamsi will go back to the drawing room. They will be inclined to cash in on the mania and think of making a 'Triple Tillu' or something.

But the decision to make a franchise is fraught with its own share of risks. It is difficult to keep the character Tillu engaging especially if his characterization and socio-economic background are static. Perhaps, he also needs to bump into a lovely woman who is noble and not calculated. And there needs to be a genuine twist in 'Tillu Square' that doesn't feel forced. 'Tillu Square' needs to have good humour density, above all.
