Bhagyashri Borse's filmography has a strange quality

Actress Bhagyashri Borse is carving out a distinct path in South Indian cinema despite her flop streak. She has shown a strong preference for period settings without having to actively seek it. Her filmography includes retro and historical projects almost exclusively: Ravi Teja-starrer Mr. Bachchan (BO result: Disaster), Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom (Average), Dulquer Salmaan's Kaantha (A flop in Telugu), and Ram Pothineni's Andhra King Taluka (Flop). This pattern, although entirely accidental, shows her clear intent to choose stories that are not contemporary.

This timeline focus continues in her upcoming projects. Her next film, Akhil Akkineni's Lenin, is also a period movie. Interestingly, Lenin and another upcoming film, Seyon, share striking thematic similarities. Both projects are designed as rural action dramas. They also weave mythological undertones or themes into their narratives. While Lenin derives its narrative beats and characterizations from the Mahabharatha, Seyon, in which actor Sivakarthikeyan plays a Lord Skanda-inspired character, is partly derived from the Tamil religious literature. Both Lenin and Seyon offer Bhagyashri an opportunity to turn around her career.

In Lenin, to be released in theatres on July 10, Bhagyashri plays Bharathi, the titular character's love interest. "The story has the quality of an epic drama," she recently said.
