Jana Nayakudu locks OTT release, ZEE5 viewers gear up for Vijay's final film

Some premieres are just release dates. This one feels like history closing a chapter. From August 21, Tamil Zee 5 will stream Jana Nayakudu (Jana Nayagan), the political action drama directed by H Vinoth and led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. The farewell film arrives in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, putting it in front of audiences across four language markets at once.

For decades, Vijay's films weren't confined by state borders. They travelled through fan clubs, dubbing circuits, and word of mouth, turning him into a pan-South Indian phenomenon long before the term became a marketing buzzword. Now, with Vijay holding office as Chief Minister, that reach carries new weight. This is no longer just a star's send-off. It's the final on-screen appearance of a man whose journey from matinee idol to political leader has been watched closely, well beyond Tamil Nadu's borders.

Jana Nayakudu marks two endings and one beginning: Vijay's first film since entering politics, and his last as a leading man on the big screen. For fans who grew up on his action blocks and mass entrances, it plays like a farewell letter. For a wider audience, it's a rare chance to watch a sitting Chief Minister's final cinematic act, streaming and rewatchable, not locked to a single theatrical week.

Zee5's Lloyd C. Xavier, Business Head for Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, called the film a moment of "immense emotional and cultural significance," describing it as a fitting farewell that blends action, emotion, and family values, and one the platform is proud to bring to viewers across four languages. The film's cast underlines its scale: Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Nassar, and Narain round out the ensemble.

What is the film's plot? Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (Vijay, as TVK), a feared prisoner, is close friends with Srikanth (Gautham Menon), a good-hearted jail warden. Srikanth is the father of a young girl named Viji (Mamitha Baiju). After getting badly injured in a crash, Srikanth asks Vetri to take care of Viji before he dies. His last wish is for Vetri to help Viji join the military and raise her to be a resolute woman. At the same time, a big threat emerges. John Himmler (Bobby Deol), a powerful business tycoon, is using advanced tech to create panic across the nation. Vetri already has an old rivalry with him from his past. Things get intense when Viji accidentally gets dragged into Himmler’s dangerous games. Vetri steps up to shield her, forcing him to face his old enemy once again for a final battle.

Jana Nayakudu streams on ZEE5 from August 21.
