The teaser of Chand Mera Dil (Hindi), starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya Lalwani, was released on Tuesday. Directed by Vivek Soni and backed by producers including Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Somen Mishra and Marijke deSouza, the film is nobody's favourite.
A section of viewers expressed disappointment, calling the teaser derivative. One user wrote that it felt “so similar to Kabir Singh and Saiyaara,” adding that “Dharma Productions is playing copycat these days” and lamenting the missed opportunity for a feel-good romcom in favor of “another toxic lover and innocent girl story.” Others echoed similar sentiments about the film’s tone. “I was expecting a cute, lighthearted and fluffy romantic movie,” a comment read, “but it’s actually something on the lines of Saiyaara and Kabir Singh.”
Criticism also extended to the teaser’s execution. One reaction noted that “Lakshya Lalwani’s voice and Ananya Panday’s screen presence are literally the only highs here,” while calling the rest “recycled” with “completely unimpactful” music that offered “no chills, no butterflies, not even one dialogue worth replaying.”
Some viewers questioned the emotional depth of the narrative. “Not to be a prude, but why is there only smoke, sex and smooch?” one user asked, adding that the teaser lacked “emotional depth, stolen glances, yearning, connection,” and failed to establish why the audience should care about the characters. Nostalgia for older Bollywood romances also surfaced in the reactions. “I miss Bollywood where I used to blush at chemistry through eye contact and brief touches and yearning,” a comment read, contrasting it with what they described as “chemistry-less physical intimacy” in current films.
Chand Mera Dil will head to theatres on May 22.
