Ladies First: Americans have their own Jamba Lakidi Pamba

Jamba Lakidi Pamba, the Telugu-language fantasy comedy released in 1992, needs no introduction. Directed by EVV Satyanarayana, its gender role reversal was super-entertaining.

A recent American comedy has somewhat of a similar premise. Ladies First, a comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, is about a sexist advertising executive who wakes up in a parallel world where women hold most of the social and corporate power. The movie flips gender roles to satirize sexism and workplace inequality. It is directed by Thea Sharrock.

The film is inspired by the 2018 French film I Am Not an Easy Man. Audience reactions have been more divided than critic reviews. On Reddit, some viewers called it bland, preachy, or poorly written, while others said it was entertaining if they treated it as a light, mindless comedy rather than serious social satire. If you are looking for a sharp, sophisticated satire, it may disappoint, reviews said.

Ladies First and Jamba Lakidi Pamba are poles apart in treatment and comedy quotient.
