In 2017, the New York City photos of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor became one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the decade. Clicked outside a hotel, the duo was captured by paparazzi while sharing a smoke.
The internet reaction was polarizing. While some fans defended their privacy, many others targeted Mahira (a single mother) with harsh criticism. She faced a double standard regarding her choice of clothing and the act of smoking. Public speculation about a secret romance reached a fever pitch.
Both actors eventually addressed the controversy. Ranbir released a statement defending Mahira against the sexist backlash. He called the judgment unfair and praised her as a person he respected deeply. Mahira remained silent for longer. She later admitted the incident took a massive toll on her mental health. She described feeling broken and disappointed by the invasion of her privacy. In an interview two years later, she said that she thought her career was over. As a superstar actress, her perceived closeness to an Indian actor wasn't received well in her country.
Ranbir Kapoor is currently doing three films: Love & War will hit the cinemas on January 21, 2027. The first part of Ramayana, to be released in theatres for Diwali 2026, is an epic mythological movie co-starring Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol. In 2027, Love & War will be his first release; and the second part of Ramayana will be his second release (and it will arrive at the cinemas for Diwali of that year). He will also be doing Animal Park with Sandeep Reddy Vanga in 2028.
